Avoid Scams While Donating to Charities After a Natural Disaster

Thursday, October 3, 2024

After the recent Hurricane Helene, it’s only natural for people to want to donate and help anyway they can. Just make sure it’s not a scam!

Scammers use things like hurricanes to set up fake funds, donation sites, and even fake charities that don't go to help victims.

Make sure you check any charity that says it’s a Washington State charity at the Secretary of State’s Office – learn more at the GiveSmart Website.

If it’s a national charity, check them out on a site like Charity Ratings and Donor Resources | Charity Navigator.

If you don’t want to take the time to check a charity, visit the Combined Fund Drive Disaster Relief Center that lists charities that are on the ground doing the work. You don’t have to be a state agency employee to use the CFD site.
